Community Living Research Project

What is the Community Living Research Project?

This Lotterywest-funded research project has been running since early 2005. More than 270 people living with serious mental illness are now participating in the study, which will finish in mid-2010. This innovative research aims to:

  • Identify factors that predict people with mental illness obtaining, sustaining and regaining community tenure
  • Identify pathways to obtaining, sustaining and regaining community tenure
  • Inform services and further research.

The study is not just another survey. It is exciting for a number of reasons:

  • Participants are people with a diagnosed mental illness, aged 18-40, who are receiving mental health service support.
These people are valued for the expertise and unique experiences they are able to contribute. They and those who referred them will receive feedback about the outcomes of the study at regular forums as the research progresses.
  • Each participant is interviewed every six months for three years, which gives crucial information about how changes in circumstances affect their quality of life.
  • Interviews include a combination of standardised instruments (allowing for quantitative analysis) and semi-structured questions (which provide a more in-depth exploration of the participant's experience).
  • Each interview examines a range of different aspects of community living for people with mental illness, and the analysis looks at how the interaction between these factors (illustrated below) impacts on quality of life.

Ruah researchers are grateful to all participants for their ongoing contribution to this project.
