Ruah Inreach Personal Helpers and Mentor Program
The Ruah Inreach Personal Helpers and Mentors Program (PHaMs) supports people whose lives are severely affected by a severe mental illness. This program is a key part of the Council of Australian Government's National Action Plan on Mental Health. It takes a client centred, strengths based approach which is focussed on recovery.
PHaMs program extends the capacity of the Ruah Inreach Maddington/Armadale Local team to reach further into the community with a particular focus on Indigenous and Culturally and Linguistically diverse people in the region.

What services does PHaMs offer?
The program is strengths and recovery focussed. PHaMs Team members work together with participants to develop recovery goals and the strategies to achieve them.
The Personal Helpers and Mentor Team builds on the principles of the Ruah Local Service Teams approach, including individually tailored psychosocial interventions relevant to the client's self-identified goals.
In addition, PHaMs provides opportunities, supports and services such as:
Working with the participant to better manage everyday tasks such as housekeeping, managing finances, and learning how to use public transport.
Supporting participants to get relationships with family and friends back on track
Assisting participants to access appropriate clinical support
Working with participants to get involved in community activities
Connecting participants with other services or programs that also support participants e.g. Drug and Alcohol, Housing or Medical support.
The key to PHaMs is that it is up to the participant themselves to identify what they want to achieve and how they want to achieve it
Who are the Personal Helpers and Mentors?
Personal Helpers and Mentors work in teams. They have a range of qualifications, skills, backgrounds and experience that make them well placed to support participants in their recovery journey. They understand mental illness and the needs and expectations of people with mental illness.
PHaMs team members respect the wishes of participants. They will encourage families, carers and friends to be involved in the program - if it is the what the participant wants.
Who is eligible to for PHaMs?
PHaMs is open to people over the age of 16 living in the Maddington/Armadale area. A medical diagnosis or a mental illness is not necessary to initially join the program.
