Ruah Refuge
What is the Ruah Refuge?
Ruah Refuge is a crisis support and accommodation service for women and children.
|

Who does the Ruah Refuge assist?
Ruah Refuge works with women and children who are escaping a situation of family/domestic violence and homelessness.
What does the Ruah Refuge Offer?
Ruah Refuge provides crisis housing and case management support to meet crisis needs whilst helping women and children to build links to other services and to increase overall quality of life: this may include support on issues such as;
Family/domestic violence
Physical and mental health
Problematic substance use
Legal matters
Housing
Psychological and emotional issues
Social and living skills
Community network building
Parenting
The accommodation options that Ruah Refuge offers to women and children include on-site self contained crisis units, and off-site transitional accommodation. Length of stay is short term, negotiated according to the goals and needs of each family. The overall aim of the Refuge is to increase women/children's self reliance and move to independent living in the community in the shortest time possible.
Children's Services
Child specific support and interventions are provided under the Children's Program. The emphasis within this program is to provide children with developmental activities. Ruah Refuge also encourages and supports mothers to strengthen their parental role. The program provides children and young people with:
Opportunities to socialise and interact with other children within an educational and skills development context
One to one support, advocacy, referral, information and counselling
Play activities that are age, culturally and developmentally appropriate
Access and links to community resources
Where is the Ruah Refuge?
Ruah Refuge is located at a confidential address in the Perth inner city region. The service will consider referrals from anywhere in WA, Australia, and internationally.
How to access the Ruah Refuge
Referrals will be considered for any women with children (or who are imminently expecting the return or the birth of a child) who are homeless or likely to become homeless, as a result of family/domestic violence, and/or other life crises. Family and domestic violence referrals will be prioritised for available accommodation, on the basis of safety/risk.
Referrers should initially telephone or email the service, to enquire whether there are any current vacancies at the refuge. If there are no suitable vacancies available on that day and the client is in need of crisis accommodation, the referrer should call Crisis Care on 9223 1111, to request a list of current refuge vacancies.
If there is a vacancy and the referral seems appropriate, staff will request a telephone assessment with the client. This will determine whether the refuge can accommodate and support the family, and will provide information to the client regarding the service, and the service's key guidelines for residents. The mother can then make a decision whether she feels the service is appropriate for her family. Transport and intake arrangements can then be negotiated.
